KATHMANDU: Nepal Red Cross Society has formed mobile teams to address the scarcity of blood that could be aggravated by the wide-spreading coronavirus and the ‘lockdown’ enforced to curb it.

As the regular collection of blood through blood donation program is hindered by the lockdown, NRCS has requested the blood donors in the valley to be prepared for donation.

Dr. Manita Rajkarnikar, the director of Central Blood Transfusion Center informed that the center has arranged to collect blood from the mobile team that would reach to every convenient place set by the youth clubs and other organizations.

“We have arranged to collect the blood maintaining the social distancing and avoiding the crowd,” she said, “after lockdown we have been collecting 25-30 unit blood every day.”

Nepal Red Cross Society says that the lockdown has taken the demand also down. According to Dr. Ranjitkar collection on normal time used to be around 200-300 unit and the demand used to be somehow proportionate to the supply.

Informing about the precaution the center has been taking, Dr. Karnikar said that they have been asking the donor about their health history and test fever prior to accepting blood from them.

Dibya Raj Poudel, the Director of Information and Communication Unit of NRCS informed that it has notified the donors of various blood groups to be in ready position for donation.

Poudel said that Blood Transfusion Center has the list of 25000 regular donors.
