KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today urged the government to formulate laws that would not infringe citizens’ rights to freedom of expression.
Issuing a statement today, the NHRC said its attention has been seriously drawn towards the IT bill endorsed recently by the parliamentary Development and Technology Committee.
According to NHRC spokesperson Bed Bhattarai, any attempt to restrict rights to freedom of expression in the name of ‘managing’ the freedom would be against the established norms and the principles of human rights.
The NHRC has urged the government to become sensitive to the issue.
The NHRC has also urged the government to formulate laws by adhering to national and international laws.
It has also urged the government to abide by the OHCHR’s general comment 34 on International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which states that freedom of expression is essential for a person to reach his full potential.
Likewise, according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ Article 19 and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, every person has the right to expression.
