Govt decision to bar Bista from traveling abroad unconstitutional: SC

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has ruled that the decision of the government to impose a travel ban on former Maoist combatant Lenin Bista and stopping him from traveling abroad from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) last year was an ‘unconstitutional’ act.

The bench of Justice Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Kumar Regmi today gave their verdict stating that the act was against the spirit of the Constitution that safeguards people’s freedom of express and movement.

Bista had filed a writ petition at the SC on August 30 against the government’s act of barring him from traveling to Thailand on August 24, 2018, to participate in a workshop.

In the verdict produced today, the bench has asked the authorities concerned not to repeat such actions against him in the coming days.
