UN expert says Assange suffering psychological torture

GENEVA: Founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has suffered psychological torture from a defamation campaign, a U.N. human rights investigator has said.

The U.N. special rapporteur on torture Nils Melzer said Assange should not be extradited to the United States where he is likely to face a ‘politicized show trial’, media news reports said on Friday.

Melzer had on May 9 visited Assange in a London prison along with two medical experts. According to him, they found Assange agitated, and under severe stress.

Assange showed symptoms of a person exposed to psychological torture, he said and added that the psychiatrist accompanying Melzer to meet him in the prison told him that said Assange’s state of health was critical. (Agencies)
