Chinese-invested Hongshi cement found to be of substandard quality



KATHMANDU: Nepal Bureau of Standards & Metrology has found Hongshi cement produced with a joint Chinese investment of substandard quality.

The Bureau has asked the cement factory and three local cement producers to furnish clarification within 15 days for failing to meet the set standards.

The cement was found of a substandard quality after samples were tested at the laboratory of the Bureau.

It was found that Hongshi cement failed to meet the initial setting time of 30 minutes.

The initial setting is referred to as the time available for mixing the cement and placing it in position. If delayed further, cement loses its strength.

The Bureau said it will take action against Hongshi cement as per the Nepal Standards (Certification-mark) Rules, 2040.

Hongshi cement that has been claiming itself as a technically-capable has been facing action from the Bureau time and again for failing to meet quality standards.

Hongshi-Shivam Cement Private Limited is a joint venture of China’s Hongshi Cement and Nepal’s Shivam Group. It was established with a total investment of $350 million.
