Crackdown on gambling dens: 321 arrested, Rs 31.8m seized

KATHMANDU: Continuing its crackdown on gambling activities, Nepal Police arrested as many as 321 gamblers and seized cash worth around Rs 31.8 million from their possession from different places of the country in three days during Tihar festival.

Police arrested 321 gamblers from Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Morang, Bhaktapur, Lamjung, Dang, Nawalparasi East, Surkhet, Bardiya, among other places.

Police Headquarters said the number could rise further.

A police squad from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj had on October 27 arrested 25 gamblers and confiscated Rs 2.67 million in stake from them.

They were arrested while gambling from the house belonging to Bikram Gautam at Pipalmarga of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-3 on Saturday night.

Chief of the Circle, Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Lamsal said the gamblers were caught red-handed while playing dice with a huge amount of money as stake.

According to police, they arrested six gamblers from Kholigan of Birendranagar Municipality-2 of Surkhet on October 26-27 and confiscated Rs 81 thousand eight hundred 95 from them.

Likewise, nine gamblers were arrested from Pokhara-6 of Kaski in the same two days. A total of Rs 10 lakh 58 thousand 510 form them.

Police arrested 17 gamblers from Galam of Gulmi along with Rs 2 lakh 82 thousand from their possession.

Similarly, a total of 11 gamblers were arrested from Ghorahi-8 of Dang. Police confiscated Rs 35 thousand 630 from them.

Police also arrested six gamblers from Chagunarayan-9 of Bhaktapur district and seized Rs 63 thousand 3 hundred from them.

Police, on October 28, arrested 28 gamblers from Devchuli of Nawalparasi district and seized a total of Rs 5 lakh 80 thousand 550 from their possession.

Similarly, on the same day, seven gamblers were arrested from Lamahi of Dang. Police confiscated Rs. 78 thousand 5 hundred from them.

Police also arrested 20 people red-handed during a raid on gambling from Khaireni of Chitwan district on October 28 besides seizing Rs one lakh 91 thousand cash. On the same day, police apprehended 12 people from Mahendra Chowk of Chitwan along with Rs 3 lakh 84 thousand in their possession.

Nine gamblers were arrested from Rajapur-1 of Bardiya on October 28. Police confiscated Rs 1 lakh 29 thousand 124 from them.

Likewise, 20 gamblers were arrested from Biratnagar-2 of Morang on the same day confiscating a total of Rs 6 lakh 245 from them.

On October 29, police arrested 25 gamblers from Besisahar of Lamjung and confiscated a total of Rs 2 lakh 16 thousand on the spot.

Thirty-eight gamblers were also arrested from Kirtipur-3 of Kathmandu on the same day. Police confiscated Rs 15 lakh 54 thousand in cash from them.

Likewise, police rounded up 6 gamblers from Sankharapur-6 of Kathmandu on October 29 along with Rs 34 thousand, according to police.

Similarly, seven were arrested from Bhaktapur-9 on October 29. Police seized Rs 1 lakh 25 thousand in cash from them.
