PARASI: Residents around the areas affected by the New Butwal-Gorakhpur 400 KV Inter-country Transmission Line Extension Project have urged the authorities to adopt alternative ways while constructing the project.

Locals of the project-affected area have launched protests citing that hundreds of acres of their farmland would be destroyed while extending the power transmission line from their area.

Residents of Ramgram municipality-17 and ward numbers 1, 2 and 3 of Palhinandan rural municipality have launched protest programs including the street demonstrations against the project construction.

They have claimed that hundreds of acres of land belonging to over 300 people of these areas would be affected when the high tension line is extended above their farmland.

They have urged the authorities to construct the high tension line on an alternative alignment such as using the Jharahi and Bhaluhi rivulet corridor as an alternative alignment.

According to them, using an alternative alignment will help reduce 80 percent of the destruction of their farmland.

The locals have also complained that the proposed compensation for the land lying on the right of way of the extension line has been inadequate.

According to the agreement reached between the Government of Nepal and the Government of India, the 400-KV Transmission Line is being constructed under the funding of the US-aided Millennium Challenge.

Nepal and India are equally sharing the total cost of the project that is expected to complete within three years.
