Cold wave claims 50 in Bangladesh

DHAKA: At least 50 people have died in different places of Bangladesh as cold weather sweep across the country, local media reports have said.

Bangladesh’s lowest temperature this year was recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius early on Sunday in Tetulia, a border town in Bangladesh’s north.

Some 17 people died of acute respiratory infection, reports have said adding that 33 died from diarrhea across Bangladesh from November 1 to December 28, Bangladeshi officials have said.

Hospitals of the country have been crowded with people suffering from influenza, dehydration and even pneumonia.

People having low incomes, mainly laborers, are the worst affected.

According to the weather office, the cold snap, accompanied by dense fog and chilly winds, was likely to continue for another few days. (Agencies)
