KATHMANDU, May 28: Prime Minister KP Oli is visiting India on Thursday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of his counterpart Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today.

PM Oli, who will visit India at the invitation of Modi, is scheduled to hold a meeting with him in New Delhi.

Modi has invited leaders from the BIMSTEC member states — Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand – to attend his swearing-in ceremony on May 30 in the Indian capital of New Delhi as a gesture of primacy, economic diplomacy, and connectivity, media reports have said. Prime Minister Oli is currently the chairman of SAARC and BIMSTEC.

Prime Minister Oli will be accompanied by his spouse Radhika Shakya, Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi, and PM Oli’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Rajan Bhattarai during the visit. Prime Minister Oli and his team will return home on Friday.

In 2014, Indian PM Modi had invited leaders of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAAARC) in his swearing-in ceremony. Then Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala had attended the ceremony.

This will be PM Oli’s second visit to India since he came to power in February 2018. His first visit to India was in April 2018 after he assumed the country’s top executive post.

Meanwhile, the official spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar, said on Monday that the Government of India has invited BIMSTEC Member States leader for PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony to be held at 7 pm on May 30, 2019, at the Rastrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Modi will be sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday a week after Modi returned to power in a landslide victory in the 17th Lok Sabha elections 2019.

In 2014, Modi had invited all SAARC leaders for his swearing-in ceremony.
