Over 270 die from overwork-related illnesses in Indonesia

JAKARTA: More than 270 election staff died in Indonesia ten days after it held the world’s biggest single-day elections, media reports said.

According to reports, they died mostly of fatigue-related illnesses caused by long hours of work, including counting millions of ballot papers by hand.

The elections held on April 17 have been the first time Indonesia, which has a population of 260 million, combined the presidential vote with national and regional parliamentary ones. The election was held in one day with an aim to cut costs.

The April 17 voting was largely peaceful, which drew around 80 percent of the total 193 million voters in over 800,000 polling stations. (Agencies)
