KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe is preparing to tender resignation from her post today.

Tumbahamphe has been asked to resign from the post paving the way for the ruling NCP to file its candidate in the election of the speaker scheduled for December 30.

Deputy speaker and Speaker of the House of Representatives should represent from two different parties as per the provision of the Constitution.

“Deputy Speaker Tumbahamphe is making preparations to resign from her post on Thursday,” said the sources at the Parliament Secretariat, adding, “She is resigning today to pave the way for the election process scheduled to begin from Friday.”

Both the posts of deputy speaker and speaker will remain vacant after the Tumbahamphe resigns. Senior member of the Parliament of Rastriya Janata Party Mahantha Thakur will chair the parliament meeting in the absence of Deputy Speaker and Speaker.

The post of parliament’s Speaker has been lying vacant after Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post over the allegations of sexual abuse.

NCP has not officially announced its candidate for the speaker’s election. According to NCP leaders Chairmen duo KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal will decide on the issue. It is likely that they will field Nembang for the post of speaker.

Nembang had become the speaker in the reinstated House of Representatives, Interim Legislature Parliament, both the Constituent Assemblies and in the transformed parliament following the promulgation of the constitution.
