Press freedom is spirit and major objective of NC: Koirala

CHITWAN: Nepali Congress General Secretary Dr. Shashanka Koirala has said the freedom of the press means freedom in the country.

In his address to a festival reception organized by Nepal Press Union (NPU) Chitwan chapter here today, the NC General Secretary said the status of press freedom indicates how the country enjoys freedom.

He went on to say that none was expected to violate the freedom of the press. He took time to accuse the incumbent government of intending to shrink the press, adding that he and his party would always condemn such move. “Press freedom is the spirit and major objective of Nepali Congress,” he underscored.

According to him, over five million youths staying abroad should be brought back home to accelerate development activities.

The NC leader, however, said all developments seen at present had happened during the NC-led governments. The present government with two-thirds majority lacked a clear vision and dream for the development of the nation.

NC central member Jivan Pariyar said the prosperity of the nation was not possible without the guarantee of press freedom.

NPU district chair Anil Dhakal presided over the program where NC Chitwan president Jeet Narayan Shrestha, NPU senior vice chair Deepak Acharya, State Assemblymember Milan Babu Shrestha, Bharatpur metropolis mayor Renu Dahal and Federation of Nepali Journalists ( FNJ) Chitwan president Radheshyam Khatiwada extended festival best wishes on the occasion.
