PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O’Neill has stepped down on Sunday following weeks of defections from the ruling party.

O’Neill, who was in the top job since 2011, said he handed over the leadership of the nation to Sir Julius Chan.

Even though he had resisted calls to step down for weeks, O’Neill resigned on Sunday saying the movements in Parliament indicated a ‘need for change’.

The country has been reeling under political instability for long. (Agencies)
