Four Hong Kong ‘Umbrella’ protesters sentenced to jail

HONG KONG: Authorities have sentenced four Hong Kong activists to up to 16 months in prison for participating in pro-democracy demonstrations, media reports said.

Earlier this month, nine activists were found guilty over their involvement in the “Umbrella Movement”, according to reports.

In 2014, demonstrators ‘paralyzed’ Hong Kong demanding the right for the territory to pick its leaders.

Justice Johnny Chan handed down the sentences at the West Kowloon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, citing “excessive inconvenience and suffering” the movement had caused. (Agencies)
