KATHMANDU: The government is working out measures to end Chhaupadi, a practice that isolates women during their menstruation period and post-natal state from home.

This practice, which is prevalent in the remote mid and far-western Nepal has been a social taboo and widely seen as a harmful practice against women.

According to Tham Maya Thapa, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, the issue, which has already been incorporated in the budget, however, said that even though the allocated budget for the anti-Chhaupadi program was insufficient, the awareness campaign would be initiated with the people’s participation.

She said this while responding to queries raised by lawmakers during the deliberations on Appropriation Bill in the House of Representative today.

According to her, mechanisms have been mobilized for the effective enforcement of the laws and acts against the practice.

Meanwhile, the government has also established long-term rehabilitation centers in several provinces, targeting survivors of violence against women, she informed.
