NA passes proposal on urgent public importance



KATHMANDU: The National Assembly meeting on Friday unanimously passed a proposal on urgent public importance, drawing government’s attention towards the need of a search for the missing ones in the floods and landslides, and rescue, relief distribution and rehabilitation work for the victims.

As many as 34 districts, including entire State 2, suffered worst in the rain-caused disasters as landslides, floods and inundations, which claimed the lives of at least 90 persons. In the proposal, the meeting appealed to all sides concerned to extend support from their sides for searching the missing ones, and rescue, relief distribution to, and rehabilitation of the victims.

“The meeting expresses deep grief over the loss of lives and properties owing to the landslides, floods and inundations occurred in various parts of the country. The meeting also pays tribute to those losing lives and extends condolences to the victims’ families,” the proposal read.

The NA members had already decided to provide their one day’s salary for assisting the victims.

The assistance goes to the families of the victims via the Prime Minister Fund for Rescue of the Disaster Victims. The proposal of the urgent public importance was registered jointly by the lawmakers of the ruling party and the opposition ones.

Lawmaker Khimlal Bhattarai drew the government’s attention towards the urgent need to address the daily problems of those who suffered worst in the recent landslides, floods and inundation.

Similarly, lawmaker Brikhesh Chandra Lal expressed worry over the ineffective distribution of relief materials in the inundation-hit districts of Tarai region. Also participating in the discussion on the proposal, lawmaker Ram Narayan Bidari wondered why the government failed to pay adequate attention to manage disaster while it was aware that country faces rain-related disaster every monsoon.
