Govt announces to withdraw Guthi Bill

KATHMANDU: Bowing down to criticism from several quarters, the government has announced to withdraw the controversial Guthi Bill.

Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Padma Kumari Aryal announced to withdraw the bill registered at the National Assembly during a press conference on Tuesday.

“The decision was taken as it seemed necessary to hold further discussions and consultations with the concerned stakeholders on the bill,” Minister Aryal said.

The highly-talked-about bill brought to ‘manage lands’ belonging to Guthis (religious, social trusts) has been widely protested and criticized, especially by the people of Kathmandu demanding its immediate withdrawal.

The controversial bill has proposed the formation of an authority to manage and oversee the lands currently managed by the Guthi Sansthan.
