Flood grinds life in Pokhara

POKHARA: A flood caused by the torrential rains in the Harpan River has pushed over 500 households at different parts of Pokhara metropolis-23 towards difficulty.

The rain that started at 10:00 pm last night continued till 3:00 am today, forcing the people out of their homes amidst the night in search of safety, said a local Dan Bahadur BK.

The flood inflicted damages at Dhile Nayabasti, Dudheko Phant, Ghatichhina, Thulakhet, Bamdi and Chanaute including other places, putting 100 households at high risk of consequences.

The river that lies on the top of the Phewa Lake forced people to stay awake throughout the whole night. It also washed away paddy cultivation on large scale.

According to Pokhara-23 ward chair Bishnu Prasad Timilsina though the flood caused a huge physical loss, no human loss has been reported so far. The swollen river also damaged iron fence constructed to control soil erosion, warning of further loss in absence of timely interventions.

Prior to this, the flood occurred in 2072 BS had devastated the area.
Incessant rains in Pokhara known as Nepal’s Cherrapuji (famous for the most rainfall) has terrorized the normal life.

Meanwhile, the Gilmeri River in neighboring district Parbat swept away a taxi in the wee hours today. The taxi (Dha 1 Ja 660) was washed away by the flood in the aftermath of two-days continuous rains.

According to District Traffic Police Office Chief Ram Bahadur Bhatta, the taxi was carrying a patient from Beni to Pokhara and the driver dropped the passenger to make failed attempts to pass it through the floodwaters. But he surrendered and escaped upon seeing the threat ahead.
