Death toll in Myanmar landslide rises to 69

YANGON: The death toll of a monsoon landslide in Myanmar’s Mon state rose to 69 as more bodies were recovered Friday afternoon, according to a release from Myanmar Fire Services Department.

The landslide took place when the mountainside of Ma-lat mountain collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Paung township in early hours of August 9.

Clearance operation was carried out in 90 percent of the landslide-hit area and rehabilitation assistance for the victims was underway, MP Mi Kon Chan of Mon state said, media report stated.

Residents, houses and vehicles were swamped by a deluge of mud and rocks from the collapse. Meanwhile, some townships in Mon state – Paung, Mawlamyine, Mudon, Thanbyuzayat, Kyaikmaraw and Ye were flooded due to the downpour last week.
