Ministry seeks guarantee of minimum wages for workers

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security has warned all enterprises to pay workers abiding by minimum wages provisions in the law.

Issuing a notice today, the Ministry has urged all enterprises to ensure minimum wages and other benefits to workers honestly as per the Nepal Labor Act, 2074 BS (2017) and the Labour Rule 2075 BS (2018).  The Ministry has warned that the violation of provisions is punishable by the law.

The government has fixed Rs 13,450 as the minimum wage of a worker beginning from 17th July 2018. Besides, employers have been urged to make sure other perks and facilities workers have been entitled to as per the rules.

But the ground reality is that the minimum wages provisions have not been implemented fully. The government had decided to increase the minimum wages by 39 percent last year as it sought to improve the living standard of workers.

The Ministry has reminded all the bodies concerned to pay workers through a banking system.
