KATHMANDU: Lawmakers at today’s meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) expressed mixed opinions concerning the proposed Guthi Bill.
While the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) lawmakers defended the Bill, opposition party lawmakers criticized the Bill.
NCP members claimed that the bill would manage the Guthi system arguing that the Bill was aimed at integrating and revising the Guthi-related laws. They argued that the document could pave the way for addressing the demands of Guthi holders.
Lawmakers of the opposition parties, however, argued that the bill would hamper the ages-old Guthi customs and tradition.
Nepali Congress lawmakers demanded that the government withdrew the bill, and replace it with a new one.
NC lawmaker Gagan Thapa came down heavily on the government for trying to squeeze the right to freedom of expression and opinion guaranteed by the Constitution.
He dubbed the proposed Guthi Bill of being against the people’s sentiments.
