Tips for healthy eating

These eight practical tips cover the basics of healthy eating, and can help you make healthier choices.

Eat the right amount of calories to ensure that you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use. Do not eat or drink too much or you’ll put on weight. And if you eat and drink too little, you’ll lose weight.

Eating a wide range of foods will ensure a balanced diet, which means that your body is receiving all the nutrients.

Doctors recommend that while men have around 2,500 calories a day, women should have around 2,000 calories a day.

Choose wholegrain varieties since they contain more fiber. Try to avoid starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread, or rice. However, make sure to include at least one starchy food with each main meal.

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables. It is recommended that you eat at least five portions of a variety of a fruit and vegetables every day.

Likewise, cut down on saturated fat and sugar since too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood.

An average person should have no more than 30g saturated fat a day. Likewise, the average woman should have no more than 20g saturated fat a day. Children are recommended to have less saturated fat than adults.

Use just a small amount of vegetable oil or reduced-fat spread instead of butter, or ghee. Regular consumption of foods and drinks high in sugar increases your risk of obesity and tooth decay. Eating sugar too often can contribute to weight gain.

Likewise, eating too much salt will raise the blood pressure, and people with high blood pressure are likely to develop heart disease or a stroke.

Drink plenty of fluids to stop from getting dehydrated. You are recommended to drink at least 6-8 glasses every day.

Do not skip breakfast since a healthy breakfast provides vitamins and minerals we need for good health. (Agencies)
