Dashain activities: Bang, events, and whimper

The week-long Dashain festival is almost over. Government employees are back to work. The country witnessed some major incidences during the festival.

Here we try to dig into some major events and incidences that occurred during the five-day holiday during Dashain, a major festival of Nepalis.

Beautification of Tinkune: Tinkune and some other areas of Kathmandu have been astonishingly beautified. The areas, mainly Tinkune, have got a new look – from a filthy space to an attractive, green garden.
Black-topped roads: Streets that had potholes have been blacktopped overnight. Seems you are driving somewhere in a foreign land.

Colorful walls and bridges: Walls, pavements and bridges have got a bright look. Brightly colored!
Beautiful gates: Several gates with pictures of Chinese President Xi Jinping have been erected in several parts of the capital. The gates seem to be extending a warm welcome to President Xi, who is paying a two-day state visit to Nepal on Saturday.

The arrest of Mahara: Former Speaker of the House of Representatives was arrested on October 6, two days before the Dashami, from his official residence at Baluwatar. Police arrested him for allegedly raping a female staffer at the parliament secretariat.

A single bench of judge Brajesh Pyakurel had earlier in the day issue an arrest warrant against Mahara paving the way for the police to arrest the outgoing Speaker.

Cricketers bring delight: Nepali cricketers added syrupiness by defeating Hong Kong by four wickets at the AI Amarat Cricket Stadium in the Five-Nation T20 International series in Oman. Nepal also thrashed The Netherlands.

Accidents: Incidences of accidents, however, brought tears to some families during the Dashain festival. Though the rate of accidents, as claimed by traffic police, has gone down in comparison to previous years, there were sporadic incidences of accidents during the festival. Three persons were killed on the day of Nawami, a day before Dashami, at Arghakhanchhi in a jeep accident. All the three died on the spot when the jeep (Lu 1 Ja 4329) they were traveling en route to Sandhikharka from Krishnanagar met with the accident.

VIP’s Dashain: President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister K P Oli, former king Gyanendra Shah offered tika to general people this Dashain.

While President Bhandari received Tika from her mother, PM Oli received Tika from his father.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal neither did put tika, not offered tika to his children and grandchildren. Dahal’s spouse, Sita, offered tika to them.

Formal announcement of Chinese President Xi’s state visit: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on October 9 formally announced the two-day state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal. President Xi is visiting Nepal from October 12 to 13, at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandari, MoFA announced.
