UN urges India, Pak to resolve Kashmir through talks

PARIS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is concerned about any potential escalation between Indian and Pakistan over Kashmir issue.

He has appealed to both countries to deal with the issue through dialogue, according to his spokesperson.

Guterres met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France last month.

He also spoke to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, according to UN chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

Responding to a query on whether Guterres has any plans to mediate between the two sides on Kashmir issue during the UN General Assembly session later this month, Dujarric said the position on mediation has, as a matter of principle, has always remained the same.

The UN chief has said that his good offices are available only if both countries ask for it.

India, however, has made it clear to the international community that the Kashmir issue was an internal matter and that it was not in favor of third-party mediation. (Agencies)
