15% youth in foreign employment are from 9 Terai districts



KATHMANDU: Of all the Nepalese workers employed overseas, only 15% of them come from Tarai that too from only 9 districts at the southern periphery.

In a financial year 2075/76 BS, the number of Nepalese youth from Tarai districts such as Jhapa, Sunsari, Morang, Dhanusha, Siraha, Mahotari, Sarlahi, Nawalparasi, and Saptari left Nepal for overseas employment, according to the Department of Foreign Employment. It said that around 78,962 Nepalese workers from Tarai from these 9 districts have left for foreign employment.

Data from the Department of Foreign Employment further reveals that the last fiscal year saw a good number of Nepalese workers leaving the shores of Nepal for foreign employment after obtaining labor permit.

According to the data, 13,723 youth from Dhanusha, 11,556 from Siraha, 10,928 from Jhapa, 9,227 from Morang, 8,803 from Mahotari, 6,692 from Sunsari, 6445 from Sarlahi, 6236 from Nawalparashi and 5352 from Saptari.

A few years back, Nepalese workers used to go to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan in search of jobs. However, youth from the Terai prefer to go to Malaysia and Gulf countries in recent years.
