KATHMANDU: Shree Panchami, also known as Basanta Panchami, is being observed throughout the country today. The festival is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, wisdom, music and fine arts. On this day, devotees, especially students, throng the Saraswati temples to offer prayers and make wishes.

Likewise, parents teach their children alphabets with the belief that the day is auspicious. The day is considered to be auspicious for performing social and religious rituals such as marriage and naming ceremony. This festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the waxing moon in the month of Magh according to the Nepali calendar.

This festival is considered to be the best day of starting something new in human life and also making commitment for good causes.
