KATHMANDU: The government on Thursday tabled a Bill on Media Council with an intent of curtailing the freedom of the press.

According to the provision laid down in the Bill, a journalist who writes news violating the code of conduct, will be fined of up to Rs 1 million.

The new media bill, once endorsed, will replace Working Journalists Act and Press Council Act. Press Council will be converted into Nepal Media Council according to the provision of the new media bill.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota tabled the Bill at the secretariat of the federal parliament yesterday.
