KATHMANDU: Nepal has started a process to evacuate Nepal Army (NA) personnel guarding the headquarters of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Libya.
The government started the process to move Nepali peacekeepers out from the African country as UN officials left the headquarters after Libyan National Army (LNA) attacked Tripoli, the country’s Capital.
“Attempts were underway to evacuate Nepali peacekeepers following security threats,” NA Spokesperson Brigadier General Yam Prasad Dhakal told Khabarhub.
The headquarters is currently housing Ghassan Salamé, special representative to UN secretary general and Nepali soldiers are deployed to guard him.
According to him, the rebellious group has declared the Tripoli-based international airport as ‘no flying zone’. However, there is no obstruction on road connecting to Tunisia and some of the staffs of the UN mission are being taken to Tunisia by road.
Spokesperson Dhakal said 231 NA personnel have been deployed in the mission and all of them are safe and sound.
