Mandatory labor permit causes diplomatic stir

KATHMANDU: The mandatory labor permit on Indian nationals working in Nepal issued by the Department of Labor and Occupational Safety has caused diplomatic friction with the southern neighbor, reported The Kathmandu Post.

On January 24, the department which is under the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security had issued a notice to labor offices across the country and finalize the total number of Indian nationals working in Nepal and inform business to apply for labor permits, according to the report.

Following the development, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri met with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Labor Minister Gokarna Bista to take stock of the issue.

Issuing a notice on Wednesday, Labor Ministry said that it has not issued any new law for Indian nationals in the country.
