Gay rights supporters parade in Warsaw

WARSAW: Tens of thousands of people participated in a pride march in Warsaw on Saturday to press upon inclusion of  gay rights in Poland’s election campaign.

The parade was organized in protest to position held by the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party which opposes equal rights given to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Ruling party says that opposition support for LGBT issues threatens Polish culture.

The Polish ruling party PiS was also against LGBT movements when European Parliament elections were held last month and will continue to oppose them ahead of a national vote expected in October or November this year.

Warsaw, capital of Poland, is more liberal and broad-minded than the more conservative rural parts of the country. Pis has strong support base in rural areas. The gay parade attracted mostly young people dressed in colorful clothes. They were dancing, singing and carrying rainbow flags in Warsaw parade. (Agencies)
