WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has accused China of ‘breaking the deal’ in trade talks, media reports said.

This has ramped up hostilities between the two countries ahead of negotiations.

Trump’s comments come as China on Wednesday said it would retaliate with ‘necessary countermeasures’ if the US raised tariffs on Chinese goods.

It should be noted that Trump had earlier vowed to double tariffs on US$200bn of Chinese goods.

Despite this, both the US and China are due to hold trade talks in the US today.
