Sri Lanka scores 5 gold medals on SAG athletics closing day



KATHMANDU: Sri Lanka has scored five gold medals in the final day of athletics under both men’s and women’s categories in the 13th South Asian Games.

Sri Lanka dominated men’s and women’s 42 km marathon, men’s 800-meter run, women’s 800-meter run and men’s 4×400 meter relay.

Women’s 42 km marathon

Hurina Kesara Wijayaratne defeated her closest competitor Pusha Bhandari (Nepal) and Jyoti Gawate (India) by completing the marathon in 2:41:24 hour. Likewise, Bhandari’s took 2:50:11 hour and Gawante took 2:52:44 hour.

Men’s 800 meters run.

Indunil Madusha and Dilshi Maheesha of Sri Lanka scored gold in men’s 800 and women’s 800 meters run respectively.

Madusha defeated Mohammed Afsal (India) and Som Bahadur Kumar (Nepal) in a marathon duration of 1:50:52 hour. Likewise, Afsal ran for 1:51:25 hour and Kumar ran for 1:51:44 hours to register the silver and bronze medal, respectively.

In the women’s 800 meter run, Dilisha Maheesha completed the run in 2:06:18 hour while Silver medalist Gunathil Aka Thu (Sri Lanka) finished the run in 2:08:52 hour.

The third position in this category has been made by Lily Das who took just 2:08:97 hour to complete the task.

Men’s 4×400 meters relay

Creating a strong position in Athletics Sri Lanka has added another gold medal in men’s 4×400 meters relay.

The gold medalist team of Sri Lanka includes Aruna Dharshana, Senira Dulaksha, Rajitha Neranja and Lakmal Priyanth, this team covered the targeted distance in just 3:08:04 hour.


The silver medal holder, India, covered the distance in 3:08.21 hour. Indian team members are; Jeevan Karekopp, Santhosh Kumar, Angrej Singh, and Jabir Madari Pa. Pakistani Umar Sadat, Mehboob Ali, Abdul Mueed, Nokar Hussain are the Bronze medalists in men’s 4×400 meters relay. They made the targeted distance at 3:08.24 hours.
