MUMBAI: Five security guards employed at a housing society in Marol robbed cash and valuables worth Rs 56 lakh from a businessman’s flat soon after he left on a trip with his family and fled on Saturday.
Later, CCTV footage showed the five, all from Nepal, acting suspiciously. Teams from the Powai police station
– the society falls under their jurisdiction – have fanned out to trace them, Times of India reported.
Vikas Kusarkar, who runs an auto spare parts outlet in Kurla, lives in a first-floor flat at Mount View
Apartments in Bhavani Nagar, Andheri (East), and left on an eight-day trip to Dubai with his wife and two
sons on November 1. In the early hours of November 2, his house was burgled. He aborted the trip once he
was informed the next day, and returned on Monday.
After the guards were found missing, Powai cops checked the CCTV footage from the building where
Kusarkar stayed. “The CCTV captured the five guards entering the building around 2 am on November 2.
They were found leaving with a bag at around 3.45 am and that confirmed their role in the offense,” said a
Powai police officer, adding three teams have been formed for the investigation.
Gold and diamond-studded ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh and Rs 6 lakh in cash were looted, said the police.
Kusarkar confirmed the robbery but declined to give details.
The guards joined society duty in ones and twos over six months. “It is learned that the society did not hire
the guards from a registered security agency. Neither did they record their antecedents or register their
details with the local police. The role of the guards was established when they did not report to work and
their act was captured in the building CCTV. No one from the building heard any sound at night. The guards
knew about Kusarkar’s trip and planned the theft accordingly,” a Powai police officer said.
