HILO: Demonstrators have constructed an unpermitted wooden building in a lava field near the giant telescope protest camp.

The Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday that county officials say protesters opposed to the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope have assembled the floors, walls, and roof of the building near Puu Huluhulu, a volcanic cone across from the Mauna Kea Access Road.

Officials say the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands was asked to investigate the site.

Officials say the building does not have permits or permission.

Officials say the structure would be removed following a notice to activists to vacate the premise.

Hawaii state officials say they were aware of the construction and were examining whether there was any lawful means taken in building the structure.
