Govt to regulate NGOs to protect national sovereignty

KAVREPALANCHOWK: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Baskota today said the government will initiate regulation of the non-governmental agencies (NGOs) to protect national sovereignty.

Stating that NGO’s activities have posed threat to Nepal’s sovereignty, Minister Baskota said Nepal should accept foreign aid, however, this does not mean that the activities should pose threat to national indivisibility and sovereignty.

Citing irregularities in the Red Cross Society, Minister Baskota, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said that the cases of irregularities in any charity organization could not be trusted.

He also emphasized the need of regulating social networking sites such as Facebook saying that even its founder Mark Zuckerberg has been pressing for regulating social networking sites after questions about their impartiality in the US election were raised.

According to him, streamlining social networking sites has been crucial since they could pose threat to democracy if they are not checked on time.
