Criminal cases against 233 Lok Sabha lawmakers

INDIA: A study has shown that less than half of the newly elected lawmakers in the Lok Sabha have been facing criminal charges. The rate of criminal charges against lawmakers increased by 26 percent compared to the year 2014.

According to a study conducted by Association of Democratic Reform (ADR), a non-government organization, as many as 233 lawmakers out of 539 have been facing criminal charges. This comes around 43 percent.

Those facing criminal charges include 116 lawmakers from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 29 from Congress, 10 from Nitish Kumar’s party, 10 DMK and nine from TMC.
