UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has lauded Nepal’s unparalleled contributions to the global peacebuilding missions and expressed UN commitment to work in partnership for socio-economic development of Nepal.
The UN Secretary-General said this in a meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, who has been here since last Sunday to attend the 74th Session of United Nations General Assembly, at the UN headquarters on Monday.
He appreciated Nepal’s peace, stability and democratic transformation and wished for further progress and prosperity on the occasion.
On behalf of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Minster Gyawali extended an invitation to Secretary-General Guterres to participate in the Sagarmatha Sambad (dialogue) to be hosted by Government of Nepal in coming to March-April.
The Secretary-General expressed thankfulness for the invitation and positively responded to the gesture.
Apprising him of Nepal’s progress to the path of social and economic development with political stability, he said the Nepal government was effortful towards attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Nepal is hell-bent to achieve the global development goals despite short of resources and means, he pledged.
Minster Gyawali further informed that the mountainous and small island countries like Nepal have engrossed their efforts to tackle the disproportionate effects of the global challenge of climate change.
The Minister also expressed pledged to continually work in partnership and collaboration with the United Nations while lauding the UN’s contributions to the progress of Nepal.
Nepali delegation leader Gyawali also took it an opportunity to extend gratefulness to UN secretary-general for hosting a high-level meeting on a global health concern, a high-level political forum for sustainable development, investment for development, updated evaluation of millennium development goals and high-level meeting on climate change. He also assured Nepal’s commitment to work in partnership with the UN in any of the areas.
Meanwhile, addressing a gathering of US and Nepali intellectuals at Chicago on 29 September, Minster Gyawali called for utilizing their knowledge, skills, and capital to the development of Nepal.
He urged the intellectuals to help Nepal implement the brain gain initiative under the brain gain center – which was established to utilize the knowledge, skills, and capital of the Nepali people across the globe.
