Chinese hackers target Nepali banks, five arrested

KATHMANDU: Police have busted a gang of Chinese nationals involved in allegedly stealing money from ATMs by hacking ATM system of Nepali banks.

Police arrested five Chinese nationals on Saturday midnight as they were stealing money from an ATM in Durbarmarg, Kathmandu. Identification of those arrested is yet to be known.

According to police, they have seized over Rs 12 million and over 9,000 USD from their possession.

All those arrested have been kept at Metropolitan Police Range, Teku and will be made public through a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, customers have been hit hard after ATMs of most of the banks in Nepal have become dysfunctional since Saturday.

According to Spokesperson of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Laxmi Prapanna Niraula, the ATM servers of NIC Asia Bank and Prabhu Bank have gone offline and ATMs of other banks too are facing issues.
