839,000 Nepalis obtain work permits for foreign employment in one year



KATHMANDU: Over 800,000 Nepali workers received work permits for foreign employment during the last fiscal year 2081/82, according to the Department of Foreign Employment.

The Department said that a total of 839,266 individuals obtained work permits during the year. Of them, 744,811 were men and 94,455 were women.

The top ten destination countries for Nepali workers during the period were: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, Croatia, and Bahrain.

Speaking at the event, Director General of the department, Kamal Prasad Bhattarai, stated that 3,516,965 individuals have received work permits over the past five years.

He added that 1,687 organizations have received authorization to operate in the foreign employment sector, while 212 organizations had their permits renewed by July first week.

Director General Bhattarai also highlighted that the department is now fully implementing the ‘Work Permit on the Same Day’ service for labor approvals. In cases where online applications are incomplete, applicants are immediately notified to submit the necessary documents.

Reaffirming the department’s commitment to reform, he emphasized a zero tolerance policy against intermediaries in foreign employment and expressed plans to amend the Foreign Employment Act to make the process more efficient, cost-effective, and transparent.
