Minister Bhandari highlights handicraft business as key to import reduction

KATHMANDU: Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, emphasized the significant role of the handicrafts industry in curbing the country’s reliance on imports.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal, Minister Bhandari underscored that the handicraft sector holds immense potential to contribute to import substitution, provided there is adequate investment in capital and technology.

He emphasized that handicrafts are not merely commodities but also represent the cultural heritage of the nation. Additionally, Bhandari highlighted the sector’s contribution to employment generation.

During the event, the Minister discussed the government’s initiatives towards implementing the draft of the Handicrafts Development Policy proposed by the Federation.

He revealed plans to establish the SAARC Handicrafts Design Centre in Nepal through a public-private partnership model.

This center aims to provide comprehensive support to handicraft entrepreneurs, covering aspects such as design, development, quality certification, marketing, and entrepreneurial schemes.

Bhandari disclosed that a building for the proposed SAARC Handicrafts Design Centre has been prepared in Tripureshwor, and the government is in the process of finalizing operational procedures for the facility.

Furthermore, he reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting handicraft items listed in the Nepal Trade Integration Strategy, formulated by the Ministry to foster the growth of industries and enterprises.

Minister Bhandari pledged unwavering support to the handicraft sector, recognizing its potential to contribute significantly to import reduction and economic development.
