KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ pledged his commitment to resolving the concerns of the labor force, emphasizing their rights and welfare.
Addressing the 6th national trade union conference organized by the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC) in Kathmandu, the Prime Minister underscored his government’s dedication to prioritizing the labor sector during his tenure. He assured the formulation of worker-friendly policies and programs to support their cause.
Prime Minister Dahal highlighted the current government as the most supportive of laborers and assured action to address their legitimate demands. He pledged to establish a constitutional national labor commission and ensure a 10 percent representation of workers in state mechanisms. Warning employers who do not enlist employees under the social security scheme, he vowed appropriate measures.
The Prime Minister emphasized the implementation of a contribution-based social security scheme for the welfare of workers in both informal sectors domestically and abroad. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting workers and their legitimate agenda.
Ensuring the rights of foreign migrants was also a focal point, with Dahal mentioning the facilitation desks set up at embassies and diplomatic missions, simplifying passport and visa processes.
Dahal noted that the government had set crucial standards in political stability, economic reform, good governance, public service delivery, and social justice within its year-long tenure. However, he stressed his dissatisfaction, announcing new resolutions for the upcoming years to instill hope and lay the groundwork for the country’s prosperity.
Leaders from business organizations also echoed support for labor rights. FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal expressed confidence in the agreement between FNCCI and JTUCC, foreseeing improved relations between employers and workers.
Similarly, CNI President Rajesh Kumar Agrawal emphasized the prioritization of workers’ welfare. JTUCC President Binod Shrestha assured continued efforts in promoting workers’ welfare and resolving their issues.
Shrestha expressed concern over the lack of institutionalization of trade unions’ rights and urged the government to introduce worker-friendly programs and promptly endorse labor-friendly international conventions.
The two-day conference aims to discuss strategies among stakeholders to ensure the rights and welfare of the working class. Additionally, the conference will elect new leadership for JTUCC.
