Ruling coalition agree to fix local election date after consultation with legal experts

KATHMANDU: The ruling five-party alliance has decided to set a date for the local elections after holding discussions with constitutional and legal experts.

A meeting of the coalition’s high-level political coordination committee held at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar on Friday evening decided to fix the date of the election after holding discussions with legal experts.

The Constitution hails that the local level election can be held within six months after the term of local level people’s representatives expires whereas the Election Act provisions regard it mandatory to hold the election two months prior the term of the elected representatives expires.

Based on the Election Act, the Election Commission has been requesting the government to fix the election date at the earliest.
