KATHMANDU: The main opposition CPN-UML has said that the President should reconsider the ordinance issued to amend Political Parties Act so as to facilitate dividing political party.

The UML protested after the government brought an ordinance to split political parties by introduction of a new provision by which a new party can be registered at the Election Commission (EC) with 20 percent support either in parliamentary party or in party’s central committee.

UML’s Election Department Chief Agni Kharel said that the President should reconsider the ordinance.

Recalling that when the previous government had brought the ordinance and the President received flak for facilitating the government by promptly certifying the ordinance, Kharel said, “If those criticisms were vaild, the Preident should reconsider the ordinance now.”

He also stressed that the Nepali Congress (NC) should present its view on the ordinance. He said the NC slammed the previous government when it issued the ordinance last year and had labeled the move as unconstitutional, he reasoned, “How can the same thing be vaild when the NC has become the ruling party?”
